
Coping with the Effects of ADHD
The assistance that is offered to individuals with ADHD is based on the use of various integrated therapeutic approaches, which work together to achieve a comprehensive improvement in the functioning of the individual/child with this disorder. Here are a few elements of the therapy:
- Psychoeducation: Understanding the nature of the disorder and its impact on the individual’s daily life. Education may include information on time management strategies, organization, and planning in accordance with the client’s predispositions and preferences.
- Understanding the spectrum of one’s own symptoms and jointly generating the best strategies tailored to individual needs.
- Behavioral Therapy: Developing skills to manage one’s behavior and emotions. This may include techniques such as: social skills training, stress management training, problem-solving skills training.
- Assistance in identifying and changing negative thoughts and beliefs.
- Working on managing impulsivity – relaxation exercises.
- Mindfulness training and calming breathing exercises.
- Mental Training: developing strategies to cope with difficulties such as forgetfulness and distraction, exercises to improve concentration, working on consistency and setting personal rules for task completion.
- Family Sessions: Joint sessions with the family of the individual/child with ADHD to help them understand and cope with the challenges associated with the disorder. Family meetings will aim to help build healthy relationships and communication within the family, taking into account the specific needs of the child/family member.
